January 2007

It's 2007 already!  Can you believe it?  I'm looking forward to a wonderful new year.  I hope you are too.

Last month (December) was a blur.  Although our church didn't do a Christmas musical for the first time in 4 years, I kept busy by singing in the choir at East Whittier United Methodist church for their special Christmas program.  Their current Minister of Music is Judy Kertes, and she does a terrific job with not only the church choir but also with the New Century Singers, a community women's choir.  I enjoy helping out there whenever I can.

My connection to the EWUM church goes back several years when my former choir director, Al Jessup, accepted their Director of Music Ministries position and asked me to sing in a couple of special programs.  One program I really enjoyed was an old-fashioned church sing where the choir and worship team performed old-time hymns and Gospel music.  I sang an up-tempo version of 'Unclouded Day' that was well received, especially with Al's expert piano accompaniment.  We had a terrific time on that warm Sunday in June.  I also had the opportunity to sing 'How Great Thou Art' there a few months later as Al went home to his eternal reward.

Other highlights of the 2006 Christmas season was singing with the Cross Road Quartet in Acton and in La Verne, singing a solo in our church's Christmas Eve morning service and singing in a special ensemble for the Christmas Eve evening service.

Dianne and I took in the New Years Eve Gospel Music concert that was sponsored by the Tradesmen.  It was wonderful to see such a turnout - the place was packed.  Jerry and I also attended the Watchmen anniversary concert on January 7, which was also well-attended even given the ticket prices.  It is terrific to see Southern Gospel music still well received in Southern California.

I hope to see you at one of the future concerts of the Cross Road Quartet or other groups soon!

Blessings...

Robert
